“Healing Places” is a documentary series for SWR television. Over three episodes, we explore ancient sacred sites in southwestern Germany. I wrote the screenplay, directed the series, and also produced all the VFX shots for the reenactment scenes. Reenactments always felt wrong to me when portrayed “realistically,” as they pretend to know exactly how things were back then, thereby violating the rules of documentary filmmaking. That’s why we took a unique approach to depict the past in scenes frozen in time. For this, we had the massive soundstage, the “Studio 5” in Baden-Baden at our disposal, complete with a specially designed green screen.
