Eine junger Geschäftsmann wacht eines Morgens auf und sieht sich zwei irgendwie offiziell aussehenden Fremden gegenüber, die erklären, sie hätten die Aufgabe, ihn zu beobachten. Über die Gründe wüssten sie leider nicht Bescheid. Da sich die beiden nicht vertreiben lassen, beschließt er, sie zunächst einmal zu ignorieren. Dies ist allerdings gar nicht so einfach, da sie ihm nicht mehr von der Seite weichen, ihm sogar bis unter die Dusche folgen und alles was er tut und sagt, jede noch so kleine Geste, eifrig in ihren kleinen Notizbüchern festhalten. Wird er es schaffen, sich der Beobachtung zu entziehen? Dieser Frage geht „Die Beobachtung" mit einer Mischung aus absurder Komik und beklemmenden Thrillerelementen nach. Ken Duken spielt den smarten Geschäftsmann unter Beobachtung, der mit den beiden stets freundlich zurückhaltenden aber allgegenwärtigen Beobachtern - gespielt von Volker Zack Michalowski und Matthias Bernhard Paul - konfrontiert wird. On a normal day as any other, a man wakes up to be surprised by two formal-looking stragers who calmly explain that they have been assigned to observe him. They don't know anything about the reasons or who sent them. All they know is that they have to observe the man day in and day out. He comes to realize that it is no use complaining and shouting. The two stragers won't leave. So he tries to ignore them for the time being. But this is not so easy because they follow him everywhere and write down every tiny word or gesture of his in their little notebooks. Surprisingly, his attorney says that there is nothing he can do legally about the observers. He should learn to live with it. After all they do not restrain him physically. They are only watching. He calls in sick and locks himself into his apartment. All he can think of is his fiancée Lisa. He does not want her to know that he is under observation all day long like a criminal. When she calls, planning to visit him, he yells at her. When Lisa hangs up, his heart is broken. He knows that he has got to do something. Can he free himself of the omnipresent Observers? The film answers the question by the means of many thriller elements combined with absurd and dark humor. It remains unclear where the two observers come from and why they are observing the man. There is also not one clear-cut interpretation of the deeper meaning of the film. There are many directions. Depending on whether an audience reads the film sociological, psychological or even religious they will come to different conclusions: Has the film a happy ending? Is the hero redeemed or does he just resign to the simple fact that he is unable to change the situation?
